Same-sex marriage promises to be an enormously divisive issue in this election year. No current candidate stands for gay marriage: President Obama advocates civil unions and Congressman Ron Paul says that the issue should be left to the states. Yet, several candidates are vehemently opposed to same-sex marriage. One of them is Rick Santorum.
Now, whether you agree or oppose same-sex marriage, you should read Conor Friedersdorf’s article in The Atlantic, which at least has the benefit of providing for and against arguments in a coherent manner, unlike Santorum’s stump speeches. Dale Carpenter over at the Volokh Conspiracy also has a take on Santorum’s positions.
If you’ve never read Friedersdorf’s pieces, you should. He provides an honest analysis of current political issues, even when he disagrees with them. This piece about moving the Supreme Court is a fine example, as is his piece on Andrew Sullivan and Obama.
